Just a quick thanks to everybody who made it to Mom's/Ladies' Night Out last night. We had a blast! The movie (Date Night) was hysterical and everyone had a great time. I'll post a more official announcement towards the end of October but we're planning on Wednesday, October 27 @ 5:45 p.m. (snacks at 5:30).

Films in October - Weston Theater

Make plans to join us on Columbus Day, October 11th at 2:30 for a showing of the 2010 remake of the 1984 film The Karate Kid. Not just a re-tread, the new movie delivers "a viewing experience filled with action-packed martial arts scenes, great footage of China and its many wonders, and an absorbing story of a pre-adolescent boy's struggle to find his own inner strength ... What remains the same, and just as powerful, is the underlying story: a young boy moves to a new place where he feels isolated and is bullied by his peers. Through an unlikely relationship with an adult, the boy not only learns to protect himself through martial arts, but develops the much more important qualities of respect and the mastery of one's own mind and body." (Amazon - Tami Horiuchi). The film is rated PG.

On Thursday, October 14th at 5:45 and Saturday, October 16th at 2:00 PM we will feature the film Robin Hood (PG-13), with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Told with more historical depth than your average "men in tights" movie, the movie features an older, more seasoned hero and is more concerned with portraying the royal intrigue that went into creating Robin Hood than in detailing the high jinks of the Nottingham outlaws. "In short, not a Gladiator re-do for Scott and Crowe, but a civilized tale of tyrants and rebels, staged in a pleasingly old-fashioned way." (Amazon -- Robert Horton)

Both movies are free and open to the public, with popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.

The Twilight Book Club reads "Home"

Join us on Tuesday, October 7th at 6:30 PM to discuss Marilynne Robinson's Home, a sequel to her Pulitzer-prize winning Gilead. A novel that explores the lives of characters introduced in Gilead, Home centers around the story of Jack Boughton, black sheep and beloved son of Reverend Robert Boughton. It is 1957 in Gilead, Iowa, and Jack and his sister Glory have come back home to care for their dying father.

When Glory last laid eyes on Jack, she was 16, and he was leaving Gilead with a reputation as a thief and a scoundrel, having just gotten an underage girl pregnant. By his account, he'd since lived as a vagrant, drunk and jailbird until he fell in with a woman named Della in St. Louis. By degrees, Jack and Glory bond while taking care of their father, but when Jack's letters to Della are returned unopened, Glory has to deal with Jack's relapse into bad habits and the effect it has on their father. In giving an ancient drama of grace and perdition such a strong domestic setup, Robinson stakes a fierce claim to a divine recognition behind the rituals of home. (Publisher's Weekly)

"An exquisite, often ruefully funny meditation on redemption."--Megan O'Grady, Vogue

The Twilight Book Club is open to everyone, and copies of the book are now available at the circulation desk. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Lane Library.
