"The Hunger Games"/Food Drive!

The Hunger Games
Thursday, September 6 @ 5:30 pm
Special After School Show: Friday, September 7 @ 2:45 pm
Saturday, September 8 @ 2 pm

Rated PG-13 (142 minutes)

**At each showing of The Hunger Games we will be collecting donations of canned and boxed non-perishable food items for the organization "End 68 Hours of Hunger". This organization is a private, not-for-profit effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive in school on Monday morning. We'll also gladly accept donations of new or gently-used backpacks (which are used to discreetly deliver the food to children at school).**

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. -- (C) Lionsgate

CHILDREN'S ROOM SUMMER FINALE:  THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS!!

MANY thanks to everyone who made this year's Children's Room Summer Reading Finale such a success! We could not have accomplished such an undertaking without the help of all our fabulous volunteers and the generous providers of water, candy, and moral support.

Warmest congratulations to the unprecedented 427 youngsters who signed up for the program! You all did an incredible job and read well over 4,000 hours in the past 6 weeks. You are amazing!

We owe a great debt of thanks and appreciation to the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library, who made so many of our summer events possible. They provided our prizes, lots of our supplies, and even some of our programming.  THANK YOU, Friends!

Our sincerest thanks, too, to Mr. Tim Lannan, Ms. Lois Costa, Ms. Virginia Knutson, and Ms. Alison Griffin for all the wonderful work they have done to promote Lane's summer reading program.

Wolfgang Ertl: Exhibit and reception

The Lane Library welcomes landscape artist Wolfgang Ertl as our exhibitor for the month of August.  Wolfgang is a professor emeritus from the University of Iowa who moved to New England in summer 2005 (residing first in York, Maine, and since the end of 2010 in Hampton, NH), and now devotes himself almost full time to exploring new possibilities of artistic expression. His paintings have been exhibited in solo and small group shows, and he has participated in various juried exhibitions in Maine and New Hampshire.  These days he works in more or less representational imagined and real landscapes, inspired by the seacoasts of New England and Florida, and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. His preferred mediums are oil and pastel, with the occasional foray into acrylics.

There will be a reception at the Lane Library on Wednesday, August 15th at 6:30 PM for those interested in talking further with Wolfgang about his work.  The reception is free and open to the public.

Children's Summer Reading Party - Wed. 8/8, 5-7 pm

Our kids have definitely taken this year's summer reading slogan to heart. We have signed up 411 kids who have collectively read 3,127 hours (so far)!!

To celebrate the HUGE success of this year's program we've decided to shake things up a little ;) We are going to have an outdoor party, held on the field behind Centre School on Wednesday, August 8, 5-7 pm. We will have live music, games, face-painting and more! We will have some carnival-type snacks, including popcorn and cotton candy and bottled water. At the end we will have raffle off 3 Kindles for our summer reading participants.

If you're planning to attend, please give us a call and sign up so we'll have an idea of how many people to expect (926-4729). Feel free to bring a blanket or chairs and pack a picnic, since the party will be right at dinner time!

Additional info: Summer reading logs are due on Wednesday, Aug. 8 by Noon. If you're interested in helping out with the party we still need about 7 or 8 volunteers (we'll need help with games/booths, setup and breakdown). Also, we are accepting donations of of bottled water and prizes for the games. The prizes should be non-peanut penny candy (like dum-dums, tootsie rolls, etc.) and small prizes like plastic rings, stickers, etc. Please call the Children's Room at 926-4729 or email Wendy at wrega@comcast.net if you would like to volunteer or make a donation.
