Endangered Books: A Tale of Weeding Woes

Santa Claus in Baghdad Larklight Keturah and Lord Death We are constantly adding new and exciting items to the library collection.  This is what keeps the collection current and interesting.  If we only added to the collection, we'd quickly run out of room, though, so occasionally, we also have to "weed" the collection.  The thing is, books need to prove themselves worthy of taking up space on the shelves.  I am currently in the midst of a weeding project for the Teen Collection.  Some titles are easier to weed than others.  I've been around for long enough to have purchased some of the titles that are coming up on my weeding list, so I have a personal attachment to them.  Others are titles that were well-loved 10, 20, 30 years ago, and did well for awhile, but have been languishing on the shelf for years, now, without being checked out.

I have created an Endangered Books Cart.  It is located by the window in the Teen Area.  These are the books headed for the book sale.  Many of these books are wonderful.  Some, not so much.  They all deserve one last chance, though.  The Endangered Books Cart will be there until Friday, October 25.  If the books are still on the cart at that point, these books are destined for our Book Sale.  (Rest assured that I have no intention of just throwing books away.)  However, if any of these books are checked out, then they will have earned a reprieve.  So, here's my entreaty.  Take a look at the cart.  See if there's something you've been meaning to read, something that looks like your kind of book, an old favorite that you want your child to read....  Use your library card to save a book.  Check it out!

After School Movie: "The Croods", Friday, 10/11

The Croods
Friday, October 11
3:15 pm
Rated PG (96 minutes)

Even breakfast is an adventure when you're the last surviving prehistoric family, and the conviction that fear keeps you alive and curiosity will get you killed definitely drives the Crood clan. But Eep (Emma Stone), who's in many ways a typical teenager intent on testing her boundaries and the resolve of her parents (Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener), yearns for more than hiding out in a dark cave all day. Eep sneaks out of the cave one night and almost gets the whole family killed, but her path crosses with a boy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who it seems is destined to change everything for the Crood family. Forced to flee their cave home after it's destroyed, the Croods reluctantly follow Guy on a perilous journey that leads them to discover a whole new world full of breathtaking views, fascinating creatures, and blood-stirring adventure. The animation is lush and gorgeous and the abundance of physical and slapstick humor, especially from Nicolas Cage as Grug and Cloris Leachman as Gran, keeps the plot moving and viewers chuckling throughout the film. What the Crood family's journey eventually reveals is twofold: that focusing on living life and following the light is a viable alternative to hiding in the darkness and that anyone can change.-Tami Horiuchi

George Harvey - "Breaking into Print", Wednesday, October 9th at 6:30 PM

Two years ago, Hampton resident George Daniel Harvey began to think about writing a book.  A former New York police officer with a later career in caring for emotionally disturbed children, George wanted to set down in words the "crossroad moments" in his life that have moved him along a path of wisdom and understanding.  The result is his book Journey to Yes, recently published by Alibris Press and available both as an e-book download and on the shelf at area book stores.

Please join us on Wednesday evening, October 9th at 6:30 PM to hear George describe the events that took him from moments of thoughtful introspection to the reality of a published book.  Notes George, "Writing is hard work.  It requires your full attention and presence.  You may think that you are writing the book, but soon you realize that the book, in many respects, is writing itself through you!  Writing Journey to Yes took me on quite a journey, the likes of which I could not have imagined when I first started out."

The author talk is open to all, with light refreshments provided by the library and time at the end for questions and book signings.
