There's more than meets the eye when you join SOFIA THE FIRST for a royally scrumptious adventure! All the monarchs from Enchancia's neighboring kingdoms have come to watch a dazzling display of magic: First, Cedric will conjure up a fabulous feast. Next, he'll transform the banquet room into a hall of amazing "morpho-mirrors." But before the fun begins, wicked Miss Nettle (disguised as "Sascha The Sorceress") crashes the party with a scheme to steal Sofia's magical amulet. Can Sofia foil the bad fairy's plan before it's too late? Perhaps...with help from Snow White, who reminds her it's important to trust your instincts. Sparkling with music and excitement -- plus four more spellbinding episodes -- THE ENCHANTED FEAST may be the fairest of them all!

SUMMER READING FINALE!!

CONGRATULATIONS to all the youngsters who joined this year’s summer reading program.  We had 414 kids sign up!!!  What amazing readers you are!  Yay you!

Also, all the grown ups who participated deserve a big hand for the reading aloud they did, for all the tickets they filled out, and for all they do to support Lane's Children's Room in the summer and throughout the year.

We couldn’t do such an ambitious program without the strong support and collaboration with the local schools, their staff and administration. It is an honor and joy to work with such wonderful educators.

The Hampton PTA do so much for us, both with birthday books throughout the year AND with supplying the plywood cut-out that kids and their families so enjoyed at the finale.

Warmest thanks to all our phenomenal volunteers and everyone who helped throughout our busy six weeks. They assisted at programs, helped with set up and break down, and two of our teen volunteers, Danielle and Maggie, patiently counted out hundreds of tickets and wall cut-outs. We literally could not do this without you!!

We also could NOT do these large events without the generous support of our patrons. Thank you all for your assistance and much-appreciated donations of water, in addition to your will.

Flatbread Pizza was beyond good to us and donated 25 pizzas, in addition to partnering with us on fundraising via sales of their pizza.

It is also my great privilege and pleasure to say huge thank yous to the Friends of the Lane Library.  They enabled us to hire our band for the finale, in addition to Norman Ng, the magician who kicked off our summer events, AND very generously providing the money for the 4 Kindles Fires which are our grand prizes.

The Friends work tirelessly all year round, fund-raising so that we can have new furniture, games, programs, the murals in the Children’s Room, and other additions that make this library an ever-growing and vital place.  Thank you, Friends, so very, very much.

We also had an anonymous benefactor who provided a very generous check that enabled us to purchase the supplies for our family reader grand prizes. You know who you are, and YOU ROCK!

The law office of HOLMES and ELLS helped us tremendously by giving us access to their electric outlets so the bands could play—and did so with great good cheer and community spirit.  They even lent us extra electrical cord, which was way above and beyond.  Thank you, Steve and company!

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our subs: Sandy Kent, Tamara Holland, Melissa Phoenix, Chris Singleton, Sharon Svirsky, and Carol McGrath, fabulous ladies all who saved the day more than once and held the fort with grace and good cheer.

An especially big note of  Miss Wendy, Miss Nicole, and Miss Liz.  They are so amazing, both individually and as a fantastic team. The Children's Room is truly blessed to have a staff of such dedicated, caring, and enthusiastic women.

"Sherlock Holmes" Lecture Tuesday, 8/19 @ 6:30 PM

Plan to join us on Tuesday, August 19th at 6:30 PM for a fascinating lecture by Prof. Ann McClellan entitled (Not So) Elementary, My Dear Watson: The Popularity of Sherlock Holmes. The recent spate of Sherlock Holmes movies, television shows, and literary adaptations indicate the Great Detective is alive and well in the 21st century. Holmes is the most portrayed literary character of all time, with over 230 film versions alone in several different languages. Over the past century, Sherlockians created societies like the Baker Street Irregulars, wrote articles sussing out the “sources” of Doyle’s works, and, most recently, developed an entire online world of Holmesian fan fiction. Sherlock Holmes is now a multi-million dollar industry. Why is Sherlock Holmes so popular? Ann McClellan’s presentation explores the origins of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective and tracks his incarnations in literature, film, advertising, and modern media in order to crack the case of the most popular detective.
