This February we are hosting our first Academy Awards© Film Festival! We've chosen one movie from each of 6 decades: the 1940s through the 1990s. We'll be showing these on 3 Saturday afternoons in February. Below are the first two selections: Casablanca and Gigi.
Casablanca
Not Rated (102 minutes)
Saturday, Feb. 4 @ 1 pm
Best Picture 1941© - Set in unoccupied Africa during the early days of World War II: An American expatriate meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications. Rick Blaine, who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a Resistance leader, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country - but will he?
Gigi
Not Rated (116 minutes)
Saturday, Feb. 4 @ 3 pm
Best Picture 1958© - Weary of the conventions of Parisian society, a rich playboy and a youthful courtesan-in-training enjoy a platonic friendship, but it may not stay platonic for long. Gaston, the scion of a wealthy Parisian family finds emotional refuge from the superficial lifestyle of upper class Parisian 1900s society with the former mistress of his uncle and her outgoing, tomboy granddaughter, Gigi. When Gaston becomes aware that Gigi has matured into a woman, her grandmother and aunt, who have educated Gigi to be a wealthy man's mistress, urge the pair to act out their roles but love adds a surprise twist to this delightful turn-of-the 20th century Cinderella story.
