Twilight Book Club reads "Year of Wonders"

On Tuesday, August 5th at 6:30 PM, the Twilight Book Club will meet to discuss Geraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders.

When an infected bolt of cloth carries the bubonic plague to an isolated village, villagers must choose: Flee in hope of outrunning the plague, or stay? The rector persuades his flock to stay to prevent the contagion from spreading.

Mayhem begins and as the dead mount, grief and superstition evoke reactions from despair and drunkenness to grave-robbing, witchcraft and murder. But a housemaid emerges as an unlikely heroine. As Anna Frith struggles to survive, a year of catastrophe becomes instead annus mirabilis, a “year of wonders.”

Critics say: Year of Wonders is a strangely consoling tale of hope in a time of despair. ... The time period and the characters come to life. Brooks’ novel glitters … A deeply imaginative engagement of how people are changed by catastrophe.

All are welcome. Copies are available at the library now! For more info contact Debra Perry at debraperry@gmail.com.
