Movies in May in the Weston Theater

On Thursday May 6th at 5:45 PM, and Saturday, May 8th at 2:30 PM, the Lane Library will show The Young Victoria in our Weston Theater. Based on the courtship of England's longest-serving monarch, this Academy Award winning costume drama vividly re-creates a time when the young queen resolves to establish her authority over those who would rule in her stead. Emily Blunt turns in a radiant performance as Queen Victoria, and Rupert Friend stars as the young Prince Albert who steals her heart. A not-to-be-missed tale of royal romance and intrigue!

On Thursday, May 20th at 5:45 PM, and Saturday, May 22nd at 2:30 PM, we will feature the powerful film Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon as rugby player François Pienaar and Morgan Freeman as South African president Nelson Mandela. Knowing that his racially torn country would host the Rugby World Cup in 1995, Mandela encouraged the South African team to forge a unity and develop the winning skills that would serve as an inspiration to the entire country. Drawing from John Carlin's Playing the Enemy, Anthony Peckham's script takes its title, Latin for "unconquerable," from a British poem Mandela held close to his heart during the 27 years he spent in prison.

As always, admission is free, with popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Lane Library.

Earth Day Film - "No Impact Man"

Please join us at the library in the Weston Theater on Earth Day, Thursday April 22nd at 6 p.m. to enjoy this film. Sponsored by the Hampton Recycling Education Committee this documentary chronicles the one year experience of the Beavan family as they try to have no impact the environment while carrying out their daily lives in their Greenwich Village home.

from TheDailyGreen.com
“Although Beavan is unabashed about his liberal leaning tendencies, he approaches sustainability one step at a time, with a sincere desire to learn from each small experience, whether that's planting in an urban garden [...], biking around town, eschewing elevators and packaging and so on. In this he is like the best of Michael Moore, when the famous agitator is asking questions rather than shouting someone down.”

Open to the public free of charge.

"Meet the Author" & book signing - Lori White Cotter

The Hampton Historical Society, in conjunction with the library, will present a talk by Hampton's own Lori White Cotter on Tuesday April 20 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Lane Room at the library. Ms. Cotter, Hampton teacher, historian and Toppan descendant will present the long overdue work of Edmund Willoughby Toppan (1808-1845) Toppan's History of Hampton - The Early Settlers 1630-1730. This never before published book tells the tale of the early settlers of Hampton, N.H.

Ms. Cotter transcribed Edmund Toppan's handwritten notes, updated references and dates, and edited this seminal work on early Hampton history. She will share both this history and her efforts to publish it.

Lori will be available before her talk from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.and after her talk from 7:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. for book signing and questions.

The Twilight Book Club reads "That Old Cape Magic"

Join us on Tuesday, May 4th at 6:30 PM as the Twilight Book club discusses Richard Russo's That Old Cape Magic, a book that explores how the threads of our carefully planned lives can become unwoven at the oddest moments ...

(From the Publisher's description) That Old Cape Magic is a novel of deep introspection and every family feeling imaginable, with a middle-aged man confronting his parents and their failed marriage, his own troubled one, his daughter’s new life and, finally, what it was he thought he wanted and what in fact he has. The storytelling is flawless throughout, moments of great comedy and even hilarity alternating with others of rueful understanding and heart-stopping sadness, and its ending is at once surprising, uplifting and unlike anything this Pulitzer Prize winner has ever written.

The Twilight Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lane Memorial Library, and is open to all. Contact Darrell Eifert at deifert(at)hampton.lib.nh.us, or call 926-3368 for more information.
