"Make Sure It's Me" - Tuesday, April 23 at 6:30 PM

The Lane Memorial Library and ACT ONE invite you to join us on Tuesday, April 23 at 6:30 PM for MAKE SURE IT'S ME/nh, a community discussion about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) being experienced by American military service members.

MAKE SURE IT'S ME/nh is an arts and education program created by ACT ONE, based on the play Make Sure It's Me by Kate Wenner, an award-winning former producer of ABC's 20/20. This powerful play is a fictionalized account of five injured veterans and the medical researcher committed to their care.  The script is drawn from months of interviews Wenner conducted with service members, their families, and medical experts.

ACT ONE's Associate Director Leslie Pasternack will host MSIM/nh and will be joined by retired US Army Sgt. Conan Marchi and Jenny Freeman, a certified brain injury specialist. Mr. Marchi served two combat tours in Iraq as an Infantry soldier and received a purple heart for being shot by a sniper while leading a patrol in HIt, Iraq. Ms. Freeman works at Krempels Center, a community day program for adults with acquired brain injury.  The panelists will present information about TBI and read selected scenes from the play Make Sure It's Me that highlight the impact of TBI on service members and their families.

This presentation is free and open to the public, and has been made possible by generous funding provided by the NH Charitable Foundation and the Rotary Club of Hampton.

Feature Film: "Lincoln", Thurs., 4/18 and Fri., 4/19

Lincoln
Rated PG-13
2 hours, 30 minutes
Thursday, April 18 at 5:30 pm AND
Friday, April 19 at 1 pm

As with the great John Ford (Young Mr. Lincoln) before him, it would be out of character for Steven Spielberg to construct a conventional, cradle-to-grave portrait of a historical figure. In drawing from Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals, the director instead depicts a career-defining moment in the career of Abraham Lincoln (an uncharacteristically restrained Daniel Day-Lewis). With the Civil War raging, and the death toll rising, the president focuses his energies on passage of the 13th Amendment. Even those sympathetic to the cause question his timing, but Lincoln doesn't see the two issues as separate, and the situation turns personal when his son, Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), chooses to enlist rather than to study law. While still mourning the loss of one son, Mary (Sally Field) can't bear to lose another. Playwright Tony Kushner, who adapted the screenplay, takes a page from the procedural handbook in tracing Lincoln's steps to win over enough representatives to abolish slavery, while simultaneously bringing a larger-than-life leader down to a more manageable size. In his stooped-shoulder slouch and Columbo-like speech, Day-Lewis succeeds so admirably that the more outspoken characters, like congressman Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) and lobbyist W.N. Bilbo (James Spader), threaten to steal the spotlight whenever they enter the scene, but the levity of their performances provides respite from the complicated strategizing and carnage-strewn battlefields. If Lincoln doesn't thrill like the Kushner-penned Munich, there's never a dull moment--though it would take a second viewing to catch all the political nuances. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Classic Film Tuesday: "Auntie Mame", April 9

Auntie Mame
Rated G (2 hours, 23 mins.)
Tuesday, April 9 at 1 pm

Remember darlings, "Life's a banquet, and most suckers are starving to death." That tag line sums up this exuberant and immensely amusing 1958 comedy that can be seen repeatedly, as it never grows stale. Rosalind Russell plays the flamboyant aunt who takes in poor, orphaned Patrick, played with sophisticated ease by Jan Handzlik. Mame, all glitter and martinis, raises her nephew in a world filled with acceptance and her oddball literati friends. Nothing is too bohemian. This unfolds in colorful episodic segments that allow us to watch Patrick grow as Mame oversees his unusual upbringing while she juggles a few spouses and an extended household. Russell, who created the title role for the stage, simply shines. She is bright and brassy, but never goes too far over the top.--Rochelle O'Gorman
