The Barbara London Jazz Trio - May 29 at 7:00PM

Please join us on Thursday May 29, at 7 PM in the downstairs Weston Gallery for a jazz concert featuring Hampton’s own Barbara London on flute, keyboard, and vocals, joined by bassist Jim Lyden and drummer Gary Gemmiti. The trio will play selections from Barbara’s new recording, Moonlight, as well as favorite jazz standards. There will be a chance to meet the artists and a Q & A opportunity. Barbara’s new CD and watercolor cards will be on display and available. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information please contact Amanda Reynolds Cooper at the library, (603) 926-3368.

Barbara London is an award-winning flutist, composer, pianist, vocalist, artist, and educator. Recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts jazz performance grants, she has performed across the country and abroad and produced eight recordings of original compositions on her wild aster label. She taught in the Harmony Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1986-2005 becoming the first female chair in 1994.

Jim Lyden studied with both classical and jazz bassists. He gained experience by playing throughout northern New England with blues, funk, rock, and jazz musicians including Tiger Okoshi, Herb Pomeroy, Oliver Lake, and Frank Foster. He currently performs with Curtis Clark, Thomas Snow, The East Enders, Barbara London, Dos Eckes, Saco River Theatre, and the Portland Stage Company.

Gary Gemmiti studied with the late world-renowned Alan Dawson. Comfortable in a variety of styles, Gemmiti has worked with well-known New England artists including the Spectras, Cormac McCarthy, Cari Coltrane, and blues great Mighty Sam McClain. He currently tours and records with The Rustic Overtones and Royal Hammer. Along with Jim Lyden, Gary has enjoyed an extended jazz residency at the Press Room in Portsmouth with Larry Garland’s River City Jazz.

London’s new recording, Moonlight, is a collection of her chamber jazz tunes and songs performed with a healthy amount of swing, improv, and exploration. It was recorded at Thundering Sky Studios with engineer Chris Magruder, Originally with an ear to recording a larger jazz group, it became increasingly apparent to Barbara that a trio is logistically easier...and often just as fun!

Classic Movie: "The Women", Wednesday, May 14

The Women (1939)
Not rated (2 hrs., 18 mins.)
Wednesday, May 14 @ 1 pm

Be careful what you say in private. It could become a movie. Some gossip overheard by Clare Boothe Luce in a nightclub powder room inspired her Broadway hit that's wittily adapted for the screen in The Women. George Cukor directs an all-female cast in this catty tale of battling and bonding that paints its claws Jungle Red and shreds the excesses of pampered Park Avenue princesses. Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine, Mary Boland and Paulette Goddard are among the array of husband snatchers, snitches and lovelorn ladies.

Admission is FREE. Popcorn and water are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.
