Coin Collecting as Hobby and Investment

Join us Thursday, November 8th at 6:00 PM as the Lane Memorial Library hosts speaker Raymond Murphy for an authoritative look into the world of coin collecting. An avid collector for 42 years and a 25 year member of the American Numismatic Association, Murphy will be discussing the history of US coins, why hobbyists are drawn to the study of numismatics, and what to look for when considering coins as an investment strategy.

Murphy served for 30 years with the US Postal service, and holds three undergraduate degrees from Northeastern University as well as an MBA from Babson College.

As a bonus for all who attend this lecture, Ray will evaluate and appraise one coin each at the end of the evening. Admission is free, and we encourage anyone curious about the history and value of our US currency to attend.

The Friends of the Lane Library will hold its General Meeting on Thursday, October 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Hampton’s Lane Library in the Lane Room.
Agenda items include staffing for the upcoming Children’s Book Sale on November 1 and 2, the Holiday Bake Sale and Raffle, the Valentine Tea and a vote on the Friends Bulk Mailing.

Comments Friends volunteer Linda Sadlock, “We have a number of exciting and important projects that we are organizing, and we encourage all members of the Friends to attend the General Meeting on October 25.”  Volunteer staffing for the Children’s Book Sale will be a top agenda item as many volunteers are needed to staff this popular event.

In addition to the variety of reading material, another popular feature of the Children’s Book Sale is the Doll Clothes Sale which is back by popular demand.   Items, which fit the American Girl doll, the Bitty Baby doll and the boy and girl twin dolls, are limited so interested children and families are encouraged to purchase their selections early.

All proceeds raised from the November 1 and 2 Children's Book Fair benefit the Friends, a multi-age volunteer organization whose mission is to preserve and strengthen the library as a community resource. The Friends of the Lane Library sponsors a variety of speakers, exhibits, and community events for the benefit of the Lane Memorial Library.  For more information, visit the Friends website at www.hampton.lib.nh.us/library/friends/index.htm

More Library Fundraisers

Entertainment Books

The 2008 Entertainment Book featuring discount coupons for area restaurants, stores and movie theatres is now available at the Lane Memorial Library.

Each book contains a membership card good for 2 for 1 dining as well as discount coupons for shopping, movie tickets, travel, goods and services in New Hampshire, Southern Maine and Massachusetts. Individual books are $25 and can be purchased at the Library’s circulation desk. The books also include discount coupons for airlines, hotels, rental cars and national chain stores. Once a book is purchased, individuals can register for additional discounts via e-mail.

Ruth Stimson Art Work

Note cards by Ruth Stimson, a well-known educator, community leader, environmentalist and artist, are on sale at the library. The note cards feature reproductions of Stimson’s artwork and serve as a fundraiser for the Friends.

Stimson was a Hampton resident, served as a trustee for the Lane Memorial Library and was a member of several organizations including the Hampton Garden Club and Historical Society. After Stimson’s death, her artwork was given to the Lane Memorial Library and sold at a silent auction. Several pieces have been selected and reproduced as note cards which are $10 per set of five note cards. They can be purchased at the circulation desk at the library and are also available at the Tuck Museum and at Oceanside Real Estate and Inn Gift Shop at 365 Ocean Blvd. in Hampton.

These fundraisers are two of many events organized by the Friends, a volunteer organization that sponsors speakers, exhibits, special events and fundraisers for the benefit of the Lane Memorial Library. For a complete list of Friends activities, services and membership information, visit the Lane Memorial Library website.

Library Accepting Donations for Fall Children's Book Sale

The Friends of the Lane Memorial Library are accepting donations of gently-used children's books for its upcoming Children's Book Fair on Thursday, November 1, from 3-7 pm, and Friday, November 2, from 9:30-3:30pm.

The Book Sale is open to the public and will feature an assortment of children's books including picture books, early readers, learn-to-read books as well as chapter books. Children's DVDs, videos and puzzles will also be available. The book sale will be held in the Lane Room and all items are 25 cents.

"Our children's book sale is a terrific family event, and we are expecting another great turnout this year," comments Friends volunteer Sue Hughes, who is coordinating the Book Sale. According to Hughes, families with children of all ages attend the sale including those with infants and toddlers, beginning readers as well as teenagers.

“When a child outgrows a book or moves to a higher reading level, it’s a great opportunity for area residents to donate their gently-used books to our Children's Book Sale. And after creating more bookshelf space at home, families can purchase new items at a nominal cost. It’s a win-win situation for their children and the Lane Library." Donations will be accepted up to and continuing through the sale, and items can be brought directly to the Lane Library children's room. Picture books and easy readers are especially appreciated.
