Teen Summer Programs

Lane Memorial Library Teen Summer Programs 2006

Unless otherwise stated, all teen programs are open to all Hampton-area students entering grades 6-12. Sign-ups for teen programs begin June 5th, earlier than sign-ups for the children’s summer reading program. Teens may sign up in person in the children’s room, by telephone (926-4729), or by e-mail (lmlteens@hampton.lib.nh.us). To learn more about any of the library’s programs for teens, contact Cheryl French via e-mail or at the above telephone number.

TEEN SUMMER READING

NHSPCA
Besides reading for fun this summer, teens will also have a chance to support a local charity. The teens have chosen the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA) to be the beneficiary of their reading. For every three hours each teen reads during the summer, he or she gets to drop one ticket into the “Adoption Angel” can of choice (dog, cat, or general small animal). At the end of the program, donations on behalf of the teens will go to support the care for the chosen animal(s); the amount for each based upon the number of tickets in each can. In addition to doing something good for some of the many homeless animals in New Hampshire, participants also win a chance for the teens' end-of-summer raffle prizes, as tickets from the cans will be entered in the drawing. Bonus tickets can be earned for reading in a variety of genres. Registration begins June 5. The teen summer reading program runs from June 19, 2006 to August 5, 2006. Money for the NHSPCA donation was earned by the teens or donated by friends.

BINGO
Teens are also invited to participate in the READS summer reading program for adults. Any teen looking for a challenge this summer may pick up a READS card and compete with the adults in reading BINGO, reading five (5) books from the listed topics in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line. For every line completed, there will be a small prize. Anyone completing the entire card will be entered in a grand prize drawing for a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card. Although teens will not be able to use the same book for multiple spots on the READS cards, they may double up their reading for both the BINGO game and the Teen NHSPCA Program.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

DEARBORN HOUSE PROJECT
Dearborn House, located at 7 Dearborn Avenue, is a residence for Hampton’s senior citizens. Some are quite mobile and independent, others are more homebound. As part of the library’s programming for teens, we are offering a summer book delivery and pick-up service to residents of Dearborn House who need a little help. From June through August, participating teens will generously act as the legs for residents who are unable to get themselves to the library to borrow and return books. Cheryl French will act as the liaison for the project, fielding calls from Dearborn House residents, assisting in selecting and pulling books, and scheduling the pick-up and delivery services. Teens, accompanied by Cheryl, will walk to Dearborn to deliver or pick up books on a regular basis. All that is required is a willingness to check in with Cheryl regularly (in person, by e-mail, or by phone) and make yourself available to respond to requests from the folks at Dearborn House. (Parent or guardian permission needed.) Registration begins June 5.

LIBRARY CLEAN-UP PROJECT
Another teen community-service project for the summer will be picking up litter around the library grounds. The library will provide gloves and trash bags, and participants will get together once a week throughout the summer to clean things up around here. In order for this program to work, a minimum of three people need to sign up to help each week. This program will run on a week-by-week basis to allow for vacations, camps, and other fun summer projects. Sign-ups will begin June 5. The first clean-up date will be during the week of June 19 (exact day TBD).

BOOK GROUP
The middle school book group, grades 6-8, will meet weekly for a brown-bag lunch and book discussion on Mondays at 12:00 noon. Space is limited, so please register in advance.

READERS THEATRE
Teens: Do you love acting but hate memorizing lines? Try readers theatre, a fun opportunity to entertain and educate younger readers. Sign-ups begin June 5. Rehearsals and performance dates to be scheduled.

WRITERS GROUP
Teen writers will get together every other week to share ideas and discuss writing of all kinds. Bring lunch, paper, pen or pencil, and a willingness to jump in and talk shop. Participants are also invited to submit original stories, poems, reviews, nonfiction essays, and artwork to the library’s teen literary magazine, Zoom into Chompas. Check out the new online format.
Space is limited, so please register in advance. Meets every other Tuesday at 12:00 noon, starting June 20, 2006.

WEEKLY TEEN MOVIES
This summer, the library is offering a brown-bag film series for students in grades 6 and up who have permission to watch PG or PG-13 films. Bring lunch, watch a movie, and enjoy the air conditioning. Wednesdays at 12:00 noon, June 28, 2006 through August 2, 2006. No sign-ups required--just show up!

And the winner is...

Results for the 2005-2006 Great Stone Face Book Award are in, and this year's winner--with 761 votes--is The Legend of Spud Murphy by Eoin Colfer, author of the best-selling Artemis Fowl series. Runner-up: Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.

Voting across the state for this year was up more than 20% from last year's totals. Thanks to the many fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in Hampton who took the time to vote. Keep reading!

Zoom into Chompas

Zoom into Chompas, the library's teen literary magazine, has moved online! Check out the latest reviews, the latest cartoon, and the latest "chompas" via our new Chompas blog.

If you'd like to receive notification of new posts to the magazine, send us a message to let us know.

Also, submissions will now be accepted on a rolling basis, so any student in grades 6-12 who likes to write, draw, or take photographs, is invited to send work to the editor, Cheryl French, whenever the muse strikes. All submissions will be considered.

Children's Summer Reading Program at Lane Memorial Library

Lane Memorial Library invites you to register for our 2006 Summer Reading Program, "Treasure Reading." This exciting program begins on June 29th and continues through August 3rd. The Summer Reading Program is sponsored annually by CHILIS (Children's Librarians of New Hampshire), a division of the New Hampshire Library Association. Eager young buccaneers can sail on down to the library from June 19th through June 30th to sign up for the program. For more information, please call the children's room at 926-4729.

The Flume: NH Teen Readers Choice Award

The votes for the first ever Flume award are in, and the winner, by an overwhelming majority, is Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. It seems the book that has become an international phenomenon has caught the attention of high school students across the state of New Hampshire, too. The runner-up for 2006 was one of New Hampshire's own: Jodi Picoult, for My Sister's Keeper.

Now that this year's voting is finished, it is time for Hampton students in grades 9-12 to get started on next year's list. All titles are available in the library, so start reading! Here are the Flume nominees for 2007:

Tithe by Holly Black
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
Haunted by Meg Cabot
The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen
Powder Monkey by Paul Dowswell
Looking for Alaska by John Green
Geography Club by Brent Hartinger
Velocity by Dean Koontz (shelved in adult fiction)
Twilight by Stephenie Meyers
Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson
The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon (nonfiction)
The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp by Rick Yancey
I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

Unless otherwise noted, all books are shelved either in the teen fiction area or in new teen fiction.

Summer Reading

Summer’s coming – only a month away. This year adult readers will have their own summer program with the Lane’s version of BINGO. Anyone may participate by picking up a READS card (Isn’t it handy that there’s the same number of letters in READS as there is in BINGO?). Each square will have a genre listed. Any time you read something from the genre listed in a square, you have your card stamped. Anyone completing a straight line of topics (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) will receive a small prize. Anyone completing the whole card will be in a drawing for a grand prize – as yet to be determined, but it will be a good one! Darrell Eifert, Head of Adult Services, is working on compiling lists of suggestions for each genre and linking them to our online catalog so that you can quickly find out whether or not a suggested book is in. If it isn’t, you will be able to place a hold on it online and/or find out other suggestions in the same category. Children will be able to participate in their own statewide summer reading program Treasure Reading with many pirate/treasure chest tie-ins. Watch for more information on both programs.

Library Anniversary Celebration

The Lane Memorial Library 125th Anniversary celebration continues with the ongoing free raffle. Monthly drawings continue on the 20th of each month with all the tickets being re-entered for our grand drawing on August 5th – the 125th day of the celebration.
Enter every time you come to the library. It’s free! There are pencils and tickets on the counter in case we forget to remind you. Monthly prizes vary from a Hampton History book to a Barnes and Noble birthday gift card to a basket of goodies. The August 5th grand prize for the adults is a $125 gift certificate to the Library Restaurant in Portsmouth, recently featured on NH Chronicle as being the best steak house in the seacoast. The grand prize for the children is 125 quarters – one for each year the library has been in existence!
