Kids/Family Summer Movies - "The Secret World of Arrietty" Friday, June 29

Friday, June 29 @ 1 pm
The Secret World of Arrietty
Rated G, 94 minutes

Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to "borrow" scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty's family from the home and straight into danger. -- (C) Disney

Admission is FREE and open to the public. Popcorn, snacks and drinks are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.

Childrens' Room Summer Reading Program - Dream Big: Read!

One week into summer and our summer reading program for kids is already well under way. As of this morning we have 224 kids signed up!! If you're not signed up yet, here's how it works:

Children as young as 3 up through those going into the 6th grade are eligible to participate. All you have to do to sign up is to stop by the Childrens' Room desk or give us a call (603-926-4729). After they're signed up, kids keep a log of the hours they read (logs are available here on our website and in the Childrens' Room).

Prizes: For every hour logged, the child gets a raffle ticket for our summer finale drawing. For every 2 hours logged, they will receive a paper star or moon to add to our summer wall display. When a child has read 3 hours they can claim a mini-prize from our treasure box. This year we are raffling off three e-readers (Kindles/Nooks)! Additionally, each child who's signed up for the summer reading program will have the opportunity at the end of the summer to pick a book to keep!

All logs and raffle tickets need to be completed and turned in by 12 pm, Wednesday, August 8 to be eligible for the drawing.

Ladies' Night Out: "Joyful Noise", Wed., 6/27

Joyful Noise
Rated PG-13 (118 minutes)
Wednesday, June 27
Snacks at 5:15 pm
Movie at 5:30 pm

The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.'s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose's beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more heat between G.G. and Vi Rose. -- (C) Official Site

"The House of Seven Gables", June 22 at 6:30 PM

Please join us on Friday, June 22 at 6:30 PM to enjoy a live theater performance of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 romance The House of Seven Gables, staged by the Portsmouth Pontine Theatre co-directors Greg Gathers & Marguerite Mathews.  Set in Salem, Massachusetts, the story follows several generations of the ill-fated Pyncheon family, bowed under a curse dating from the famous witch trials, and trapped in the once magnificent, but now decrepit, House of the Seven Gables. Based on Hawthorne’s experience of growing up in Salem, and interwoven with incidents from the history of the Hawthorne family, The House of the Seven Gables was an instant success, and remains a great American classic.

The performance is open to the public, and admission is free.  Light refreshments will be available before the play begins in our downstairs Lane Room.  For more information, please contact Darrell Eifert at (603) 926-3368.

Book Group for Young Adults

By popular demand, our new book group, Books and Bites, will be starting up on Wednesday, June 6.  Geared toward young adults, ages 18 and up, this book discussion group will meet on the first Wednesday of every month (unless there's a holiday, as in July!), in the Dearborn-Redden Room from 6:30-7:45 p.m.

The first meeting (over pizza!) will determine how the group goes on.  We won't have a book to discuss this time, since we're just starting out, but we can pick the books for the next few months and discuss food options.  Time permitting, maybe we'll discuss the books we're currently reading to get an idea of what sort of books to choose.

I envision a social gathering of folks discussing group-picked books every month, over a small bite to eat.
