Family Film "Wizard of Oz", Friday, Aug. 3 @ 1 pm

Wizard of Oz
Rated G
Friday, August 3 @ 1 pm

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film.--Jeff Shannon

Free Concert!

LEVEL3 and Dilly Dilly
Live at the Library!

Free Concert!
Free Band MP3′s!
Free Book Chapters!

Long before there was One Direction, there was LEVEL3. Luke Dixon, Ryan Hale, and Travis Wyland had taken home two MTV awards and won a Grammy all before they were 18. Then, to the utter shock of their fans, the boys broke up.

But, LEVEL3 is back together this summer for one short tour with Portland, Maine Indie girl rocker Dilly Dilly. And they are playing at the Lane Memorial Library!!

Why our library and not a club or stadium? Because Level3 has been fictionalized. They appear in Hilary Weisman Graham’s new YA novel, REUNITED as the band that reunites three ex-best friends for a 2,000 mile road trip to see LEVEL3′s reunion show.

REUNITED's publisher, Simon & Schuster, is sending LEVEL3 and Dilly Dilly on the road to rock the stacks of libraries from Portland to Austin in celebration of the book.

Come for live music, free MP3′s from the bands, free chapters from the book, and a photo op inside Level3′s tour van, and maybe (fingers crossed!)
meet author Hilary Weisman Graham!!

In the meantime, sign-up for text alerts on LEVEL3 and be entered to win a $50 Ticketmaster gift certificate when you text reunited to 25827.

The Weston Gallery welcomes Jar Bement

For the month of July, the Lane Library is pleased to welcome Hampton resident and artist Jar Bement as an exhibitor in our Weston Gallery.  A native of Bangkok, Jar began painting "art on glass" over fifteen years ago in Thailand.  With no formal art training, she became well know in Bangkok as an original talent, working weekends in malls and at nights on gifts for her friends and clients in the shipping industry.  Jar is fascinated with painting on canvas, cloth, clothing, and fashion accessories.  Her colorful abstracts are rooted in a love of Jazz music and the sights and sounds of busy life.  She currently displays her art in numerous galleries, Starbucks, banks and restaurants throughout the New England and Mid Atlantic area.

Family Movie: "Big Miracle", Thurs., 7/12 AND Fri., 7/13

Big Miracle
Rated PG (107 minutes)

Thursday, July 12 @ 5:30 pm AND
Friday, July 13 @ 1 pm

The oil business, politics, Inuit customs, and animal preservation normally don't mix, especially when the press gets involved. But a funny thing happens when Alaska television reporter Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) discovers a trio of gray whales trapped in the ice near the small town of Point Barrow. Adam's report gets national exposure, and his ex-girlfriend and Greenpeace worker Rachel (Drew Barrymore) hears the story, begins lobbying politicians to save the whales, and hops a plane for Alaska. Based on a true story from 1988, the film is a masterful blend of pure entertainment and a sometimes almost documentary style that manages to be quite appealing to both children and adults. The references to '80s culture and politics are spot-on and will inspire more than a few smirks and snickers from adult audience members, and the environmental message of the film is heartening to all ages. But perhaps the most powerful thing about the film is its honest look at what motivates people and how, in America, even the most diametrically opposed factions can occasionally join forces to achieve a common good.--Tami Horiuchi

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows", July 5

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Rated PG-13 (129 minutes)
Thursday, July 5 @ 5:30 pm

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large-Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)-and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder-a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by Professor Moriarty. The cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead of Holmes as he spins a web of death and destruction-all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history. -- (C) Warner Bros
