Lane Library welcomes guitarist Peter Fletcher

A life-long goal for many musicians is to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher has charmed audiences four times at the historic venue, most recently in March of 2010. Fletcher will be bringing his music to the Lane Memorial Library on Friday, September 16th with a free concert that begins at 7:00 PM in the newly re-designed Lane Room Art Gallery. Featuring compositions by Bach, Tarrega, Ravel and Grieg, Fletcher's evocative and beautiful interpretations are sure to delight and entrance all who attend.

Although no stranger to concert halls, Peter enjoys performing at smaller venues such as churches, chapels and libraries, remarking that he is apt to talk more about his music and favorite composers in a library setting. As he himself notes, "I feel like everywhere is unique and I get just as excited about a small concert at a library as I do at a larger booking at a church or even Carnegie Hall. I don't really discriminate between performances. I feel like they're all equally important."

The Lane Room Art Gallery space will officially be open to the community beginning in October, but those who attend the concert will also enjoy a one-night preview of our first show. During October the Library will feature a photographic exhibit of images taken on the streets of Paris in the late 1940s by noted photojournalist Ivan Massar of Concord, MA. Created in his own personal darkroom by the photographer, these beautiful black-and-white prints evoke the romance and nostalgia of the famous City of Lights in the years just after World War II.

Ladies' Night Out: "Jane Eyre" August 31

Jane Eyre
Rated PG
Wednesday, August 31
5:15 Snacks
5:30 Movie

Charlotte Brontë's Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga's affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes, casting can make all the difference. In this case, Australia's Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) plays the determined Jane Eyre opposite Ireland's Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) as the world-weary Edward Rochester (neither actor betrays their country of origin). Fukunaga begins with Jane's escape from Rochester's High Gothic Thornfield Hall before flashing back to the days when the plainspoken orphan lived with her cruel and resentful aunt (an unsympathetic Sally Hawkins). The aunt ships her off to a loveless charity school, where she still manages to receive a fine education, after which she lands a position as governess for Rochester's ward, Adèle. Though his housekeeper (Dame Judi Dench, excellent) makes Jane feel welcome, the brooding Rochester attempts to mock and demean her, but the quick-witted 19-year-old can hold her own. What might offend a more superficial man intrigues her employer (played by a gent more handsome than the author intended). Sparks fly, but he expresses greater interest in a local beauty. Just as Jane finally pierces Rochester's armor, she discovers his terrible secret, and hits the road. She meets a kindly missionary (Jamie Bell) and his sweet sisters, who offer her the family she never had, before a sequence of well-plotted developments allow Jane to forge her own future. For once, no one can stop her, making for a swoon-worthy, if bittersweet conclusion. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Admission is FREE. Some snacks/drinks are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library. Feel free to contribute additional snacks/drinks.

The Twilight Book Club reads "On Folly Beach"

Join us on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 PM for a discussion of Karen White's On Folly Beach.

"To most people, Folly Beach is simply the last barrier island before reaching the great Atlantic. To some, it's a sanctuary for lost souls, which is why Emmy Hamilton's mother encourages her to buy the local book store, Folly's Finds, hoping it will distract Emmy from the loss of her husband.

Emmy is at first resistant. So much has already changed. But after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly's Finds, she decides to take the plunge. But the seller insists on one condition: Emmy must allow Lulu, the late owner's difficult sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from its back yard.

For the most part Emmy ignores Lulu as she sifts through the love letters, wanting to learn more. But the more she discovers about the letters, the more she understands Lulu. As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during WWII are revealed, the two women discover that circumstances beyond their control, sixty years apart, have brought them together, here on Folly Beach."

The Twilight Book Club is open to all, with copies of each month's selection available at the main circulation desk.

Fall Schedule:

Tuesday, October 4th - Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel
Tuesday, November 1st - The Peach Keeper, by Sarah Allen

Miss Joanne's Retiring - Let's Have a Party!

Joanne Mulready is retiring from the Children's Room after 25 years. Her last day is September 1 and we want to make sure she knows how much the Hampton community appreciates everything she's done for the library and our local kids over the years. So we're going to throw her a big party and YOU'RE invited!

The party will be on Tuesday, September 6 from 4-6 pm in the Lane Room. We are looking for volunteers to help with the following: planning, decorating, and food. If you would like to help out please email Wendy Rega: wrega@comcast.net. If you cannot make the party please stop by sometime between August 15 (she's currently on vacation) and September 1 to say goodbye. I know that she would love to hear from some of the older kids who are in high school or college now and don't come to the Children's Room anymore. We look forward to seeing you at the party!
