As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Ladies' Night Out: "Somewhere in Time", Wed., 8/28

Join us this week for a classic tearjerker: Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour (1980).  Somewhere in Time is the story of a young writer who sacrifices his life in the present to find happiness in the past, where true love awaits him. Young Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by an elderly woman who gives him an antique gold watch and who pleads with him to return in time with her. Years later, Richard Collier is overwhelmed by a photograph of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour). Another picture of this woman in her later years reveals to him that she is the same woman who had given him the gold watch. Collier then becomes obsessed with returning to 1912 and the beautiful young woman who awaits him there.

New Shelves in the Children's Room (yay!)

The Children's Room will be closed Friday, August 16 and Saturday, August 17 so that the staff can transition to some new shelves and inventory the collection. We will re-open on Monday morning, August 19 at 9 am. There will be a selection of Children's Room items available upstairs for checkout and you can return items at the Circ Desk upstairs. Additionally, if you have been called for a hold that has come in, those items will also be upstairs at the Circ Desk. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but we hope you'll like the improvements we're going to make!

It is a pleasure and privilege to once again thank the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library for their amazing generosity, hard work, and support.  Not only did they provide the funds for the four Kindle grand prizes, but they enabled us to hire the Toe Jam Puppet Band, who kept our finale rocking. We are very fortunate indeed to have such a group of dedicated and delightful people supporting the library in a myriad of ways.

Jaime Langton, and her daughters Sophia and Becca, did an outstanding job painting faces at the event.  The looooong (and patient) line of children waiting to have their faces painted attests to the Langtons' artistry. Thank you, Langton ladies!

We owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone at the Centre, Marston, and Sacred Heart schools.  They are so gracious in welcoming us in to talk about Lane Memorial Library's summer reading program with their students.  In the five years since we began sharing our reading programs in the schools, we have seen the number of participants triple.

A huge THANK YOU to Flatbread Pizza, who donated 25 delicious pizzas for our party.

Hurray and hugs for our subs, Sandy Kent, Carol McGrath, Nicole Cico, and Rose Hanley.  These marvelous ladies have come to our rescue so many times this summer, often at a moment’s notice, and frequently staying later than scheduled out of the goodness of their hearts and their dedication to this community.  Volunteers Sarah Coffen and Meg Cico helped keep our department tidy and cheerfully made hundreds of paper wall decorations for our readers to sign and hang up.

Most of all I would like to thank Miss Wendy, Miss Julie, and Miss Liz.  They are so amazing, both individually and as a fantastic team.

While Miss Julie is--sadly for us--moving to England soon, I am so glad she was here to witness this record-breaking summer reading program.  You will be greatly missed, Miss Julie, but please know you've left a legacy of exceptional work, great innovations, and much laughter here in the Children's Room.

Our Books-to-Movies Series Winds Up with The Hobbit

Join us on Wednesday, August 14 for the last of our Book-to-Movie screening/discussions.  We'll be watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (rated PG-13), starring Martin Freeman.  Since it's such a long movie (169 minutes!), this one's a freebie -no time for discussion afterward.  Haven't read it yet?  We won't tell!  If you do want to read it, though, you may reserve your copy of Tolkien's classic here.  It's a great adventure book.  Come on in!

"Discovering New England Stone Walls" August 13th at 6:00 PM

Kevin Gardner's informal talk covers a few of the main topics of his book about New England stone walls, The Granite Kiss, touching on history, technique, stylistic development, and aesthetics.  He explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time, and their significance to the famous New England landscape.  Along the way, Kevin occupies himself building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket. At the end of his presentation there will be a time for question-and-answers, during which listeners are encouraged to bring up specific problems or projects on their own properties.

Children's Room Street Party is moving inside!

Due to unforeseen circumstances we are moving our Children's Room Summer Reading Finale Street Party indoors at the library tomorrow night (Wednesday, Aug. 7) from 5-7 pm. We are taking over the whole basement! We will still have all of our planned events: games in the Lane Room from 5-5:45, Toe Jam Puppet Band at 6, Face Painting, a Guessing Table, pizza from Flatbread Company Hampton, an ice cream truck (outside!), our big Summer Reading Kindle raffle and lots of fun. Come on by!! (For questions or to sign up please call 926-4729) Also - just a reminder, all reading logs and raffle tickets are due Wednesday morning, August 7 by Noon.

Teen Summer Reading Program: Finale

Wednesday we'll be wrapping up our Teen Summer Reading Program with the awarding of prizes and the unveiling of Kirsten's funky hair.  Congratulations on earning it!  Will it be red, orange, or pink?  Y'all have been voting all summer -come in and see which color won!

In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking - ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.
