'Prince of Persia' Sept. 16th and 18th

In the tradition of Errol Flynn and the swashbuckling movies of the '30s comes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, with Jake Gyllenhall now swashing the buckles. In ancient Persia it's a race against time as swordsman Prince Dastin (Gyllenhall) teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to safeguard a magical dagger that gives its possessor the power to reverse time and rule the world. Filled with death-defying escapes, a rocky romance, and villany at every turn, Prince of Persia is a fun action movie from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

Showing on Thursday, September 16th at 5:45 PM, and again on Saturday, September 18th at 2:00 PM in the Weston Theater. The film is rated PG-13, admission is free, and popcorn and drinks are provided by the Friends of the Lane Library.

The Twilight Book club reads 'Gilead'

Join us on Tuesday, September 7th at 6:30 PM to discuss Marilynne Robinson's Pulitzer-prize winning novel Gilead. Credited by this year's Pulitzer-winning author Paul Harding as a significant mentor of his own work, Robinson has created novels that are consistently described as "wondrous", "exquisite", "beautiful", and "elegant".

Gilead
is the story of 76 year old Reverend John Ames, who in 1956 begins a letter to his young son recounting the history of himself and his forebears. Weaving together accounts of his life in a small Iowa town, the early Kansas abolitionists and the bitter strife between Ames' pacifist father and Union army chaplain grandfather, Ames searches for a clarity and wisdom in these strands that will serve as a legacy when his son is grown.

"Robinson's prose is beautiful, shimmering and precise; the revelations are subtle but never muted when they come, and the careful telling carries the breath of suspense." --- Publisher's Weekly

Copies are available now at the circulation desk, and light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library. The Twilight Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month and is open to all.

Children's Room Summer Reading Program Wrap-Up

"Make A Splash - Read!"

Well, we definitely "made a splash" with the Summer Reading Program this year. We ended the summer with 347 participants who collectively read 2,815 hours! Plus... we had a total of 1,591 people attend the various summer programs including story times, movie matinees and the big shows like Peter Bois, Wayne from Maine and Wildlife Encounters.

Our reading finale was fantastic with about 120 people there to watch the Reading Prize Raffle. Thanks to the generosity of many local sponsors we were able to give out around 65 prizes including a skateboard deck from Pioneers Board Shop, Silly Bandz! from the Great American Country Store and gift certificates to Las Olas, Galley Hatch, Loop-T-Scoop, Lagos and many others.

The big winners of the night were Ella Olsen and Danielle Apple - they each took home 4-person passes to York's Wild Animal Kingdom courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Library. Also, every child who participated in the program received a book, hand-picked by Joanne Mulready! (Please stop by the Children's Room if your child hasn't yet received their book.)

A special thanks goes out to Michelle Trinceri and Caroline Holmes for coordinating the yummy treats for the party. Paulina, Joanne and Wendy want to express our appreciation to the entire community for helping to keep our kids reading over the summer. We couldn't do it without your support!

'Avatar' showing August 12th and 14th

Please join us in the Weston Theater for 2 showings of James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar. Four years in the making, this film takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. Avatar delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

The 3-hour film on blu-ray disc will premier on Thursday, August 12th at 5:00 PM, and show again on Saturday, August 14th at 9:30 AM. Avatar is rated PG-13 and admission is free with popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.
