DROP-IN STORY TIME and STUFFED ANIMAL SLEEPOVER

Looking for a fun (and free) activity for your youngsters this February break? Come join us for a special drop-in story time on Wednesday, February 29th at 10 a.m.

The story time is geared toward children ages 3-6, but all are welcome. Miss Paulina will share books, fingerplays, and songs, as well as our traditional ring-around-the-rosy and hokey-pokey. The session runs approximately half an hour, and no signs ups are required.

Represesentatives from the Richie McFarland Children's Center will give a brief introduction to all the services they provide for local youngsters. They will remain after the story time to answer any questions you might have regarding early child development.

Kids are encouraged to bring a 2nd-favorite stuffed animal or toy so they can leave it with us overnight. The next day the children can come to pick up their stuffed animal, as well as a photo showing what it did during its sleepover here at Lane. Did it read a book? Check out the computer? Play with puppets? You'll definitely want to see the good times it had when it stayed with us.

Even if you can't come to our story time, you can still drop off your stuffed animal until 3 p.m.

If you have any questions, please call us at 926-4729.

Ladies' Night Out - "The Philadelphia Story", Wed. 2/29

On Wednesday, Feb. 29, we'll wrap up our Academy Awards Festival with a showing of A Philadelphia Story for Ladies' Night Out. We'll have snacks out around 5:15 pm and we'll start the movie at 5:30 pm. We'd love to have you join us for this classic romantic comedy.

Re-creating the role she originated in Philip Barry's wickedly witty Broadway play, Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord in this sparkling 1940 screen adaptation of The Philadelphia Story, one of the great romantic comedies from the golden age of MGM studios. Applying her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself, Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband (Cary Grant), arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid exposé. In an Oscar-winning role, James Stewart is the scandal reporter who falls for Tracy as her wedding day arrives, throwing her into a dizzying state of premarital jitters. Who will join Tracy at the altar? Snappy dialogue flows like sparkling wine under the sophisticated direction of George Cukor in this film that turned the tide of Hepburn's career from "box-office poison" to glamorous Hollywood star. --Jeff Shannon

Admission is FREE. Popcorn, water and snacks are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library. Feel free to bring additional snacks for everyone to enjoy!~Wendy

Academy Awards Film Festival - The End!

This February we are hosting our first Academy Awards© Film Festival! We've chosen one movie from each of 6 decades: the 1940s through the 1990s. We'll be showing these on 3 Saturday afternoons in February. Below are the last two selections: Rain Man and Unforgiven.

Rain Man
Rated R (133 minutes)
Saturday, Feb. 25 @ 12 pm

Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman and Best Picture-1988. Dustin Hoffman is a 'triumph' (People) ..., and Tom Cruise is 'terrific' (ABC Radio) in a film that's fascinating, touching and full of smart surprises' (Newsweek)! Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) has just discovered he has an autistic brother named Raymond (Hoffman) and is now taking him on the ride of his life. Or is it the other way around? From his refusal to drive on major highways to a four minutes to Wapner meltdown at an Oklahoma farmhouse, Raymond first pushes hot-headed Charlie to the limits of his patience and then pulls him completely out of his self-centered world! But what began as an unsentimental journey for the Babbitt brothers becomes much more than the distance between two places it's a connection between two vastly different people and a poignant, profound and powerful film (Joel Siegel, ABC-TV)!

Unforgiven
Rated R (131 minutes)
Saturday, Feb. 25 @ 2:30 pm

Winner of four Academy Awards, including best picture, director, supporting actor, and best editing, Clint Eastwood's 1992 masterpiece stands as one of the greatest and most thematically compelling Westerns ever made. "The movie summarized everything I feel about the Western," said Eastwood at the time of the film's release. "The moral is the concern with gunplay." To illustrate that theme, Eastwood stars as a retired, once-ruthless killer-turned-gentle-widower and hog farmer. He accepts one last bounty-hunter mission--to find the men who brutalized a prostitute--to help support his two motherless children. Joined by his former partner (Morgan Freeman) and a cocky greenhorn (Jaimz Woolvett), he takes on a corrupt sheriff (Oscar winner Gene Hackman) in a showdown that makes the viewer feel the full impact of violence and its corruption of the soul. Dedicated to Eastwood's mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel and featuring a colorful role for Richard Harris, it's arguably Eastwood's crowning directorial achievement. --Jeff Shannon

Academy Awards Film Festival in February!

This February we are hosting our first Academy Awards© Film Festival! We've chosen one movie from each of 6 decades: the 1940s through the 1990s. We'll be showing these on 3 Saturday afternoons in February. Below are the two middle selections: West Side Story and The Sting.

West Side Story
Not Rated (152 minutes)
Sat., Feb. 18 @ 11:45 am

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh

The Sting
Rated PG (129 minutes)
Sat., Feb. 18 @ 2:30 pm

The winner of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Sting has become one of America's favorite and most critically acclaimed films. Robert Redford and Paul Newman star as two con men in the 1930's out to avenge the death of a friend. They seek revenge on a crime lord (Robert Shaw) with a "sting" that is one of the greatest double-crosses in movie history, complete with an amazing surprise finish. Directed by George Ray Hill and written by David S. Ward.

Admission is Free. Popcorn and water are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.
