"Ten Hours Until Dawn" - Saturday, January 6th at 3:00 PM

Newspaper columnist Michael Tougias will recount from his book the details surrounding one of the most daring sea rescue attempts in recent history. During the height of the Blizzard of 1978, the pilot boat Can Do, with five men on board, set out from Gloucester to assist a lost Coast Guard boat and an oil tanker in a mayday situation. Find out what happened on that awful night when seas became skyscrapers and 100 mile per hour winds battered New England. An electrifying true tale of a blinding storm, a crew in peril at sea, and the men who risked their lives to save them.

Presenting actual radio communications of the boats in distress, Tougias tells the story of who survived, and who did not and why.

A Premier Business Research Tool Is Now Available Through the Lane Memorial Library 24/7!

The Lane Memorial Library is extremely pleased to announce that it is now offering ReferenceUSA®, a powerful online research tool! ReferenceUSA provides library cardholders instant, real-time access to accurate, in-depth information on 14 million businesses and 210 million consumers. It is very easy to navigate, so even computer novices will feel at ease searching ReferenceUSA.

This is a great research tool for anyone wanting to make lists of companies for any reason. If you’re putting together a mailing list, this is the place to start. Companies range from multi-million dollar to one-person businesses. Over a thousand businesses in Hampton alone are listed.

The consumer information in ReferenceUSA is gathered primarily from telephone white pages. Patrons will find it to be essential for planning family reunions and weddings, organizing class reunions, finding neighbors or long-lost friends, and locating relatives, just to name a few.

The business information is gathered from a variety of reliable sources, such as yellow and white pages, annual reports, 10-Ks, government data, business magazines, top newspapers, the U.S. Postal Service, Internet research, and the U.S. Census Bureau. In fact, 22 million phone calls are placed annually to businesses to verify the accuracy of data! The quality of the information is validated by the fact that infoUSA databases power the directory services of many of the top-traffic Internet sites. And, the Wall Street Journal, in its August 29, 2006, issue, even proclaimed ReferenceUSA to be a “powerful market-research tool” crucial to small businesses. ReferenceUSA’s business module is perfect for people conducting job searches, locating out-of-town companies, tracking down addresses and phone numbers, conducting patent and market research, and much more!

ReferenceUSA is accessible to registered cardholders at the Lane Memorial Library or via http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us (click on “more” under Research Databases). All patrons need to put this powerful, comprehensive and accurate information at their fingertips is their library card!

For more information please contact the Reference Department of the library at 926-3368.

Family Read-a-Thon at the Library

Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 28th. Take a break from the end-of-year craziness and spend the day reading in the library. The library's teen advisory board is hosting a read-a-thon! Don't worry: this one isn't even a fund-raiser. It's just an opportunity to discover all that the library has to offer, an excuse to hunker down with a good book or two or twenty, and a way to escape from visiting relatives--oops! I didn't mean to write that!

The read-a-thon is open to all Hampton students and families with young children. We invite you to stay for the whole day or just part of the day, whatever best suits your schedule. Bring your own lunch, please. Beverages, snacks, and dessert provided. When not eating, participants are welcome to sit anywhere in the library. Wear comfy clothes, and feel free to bring sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows to create your own cozy nook in the Lane Room.

The read-a-thon officially runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but everyone is, of course, welcome to use the library whenever its open. Please sign up in advance, so that we know how many pounds of sweets we'll need to get us through the day. Sign up in person in the Children's Room, by phone (926-4729) or by e-mail. (Teens: Please talk to Cheryl about your contributions to this event as soon as possible. Thanks!)

Reading at the library--what a novel idea!

Art Show for the Young & Hip Now Closed

Huge thanks to all of the young, hip Hampton artists who participated in Lane Library's "Art Show for the Young & Hip." Visitors and employees alike really enjoyed having the artwork on the walls. The show brought a great deal of interest and admiration from the many people who stopped by to see it and vote for their favorite pieces: 172 total votes cast!

Alas, as with all good things, the show has come to an end. Yesterday was closing day, which means it was also the day to tally all the votes and draw for the raffle prizes. I'm pleased to announce that every single piece received votes and high praise from viewers. The two $50 gift certificates for Brush & Palette went to David S. for "Windows Lighting Up a Couch and Three Tables" and Sierra P. for "Fish" for earning the most votes. The luck of the draw (a.k.a. the two $25 raffle gift certificates generously donated by Brush & Palette) went to Brianna B. and Adam S. Gift certificates are good for any supplies or classes at Brush & Palette in North Hampton, and they have no expiration date. Enjoy! Nice work by all!

Though the meeting room walls are bare again, they won't be for too long. Coming soon(ish): The Hampton Academy Art Show.

Receive new book alerts of your choosing

How would you like to be notified whenever the library receives books by your favorite authors? Or when we get new items on your favorite topics? Well now you can, by subscribing to an RSS feed from within the library's online catalog. You may have heard of RSS feeds before and thought that they weren't for you, or you may never have heard of them before. Either way, now might be the time for you to learn more because they make this new service possible.

Imagine how nice it would be to find out right away whenever your favorite authors' books come into the library? You would then be able to go online to our catalog and place a hold on the item and be one of the first to read it when it comes available. Many of the new books, especially the more popular ones, are added to our catalog before we even receive them, so you would be able to place holds on books before they arrive at the library. In order to place holds from our catalog yourself you will need a PIN number. You'll need to come to the library in person in order to set this up the first time. Just ask how this is done at the main desk.

To take advantage of this new service you will first need to learn how to create an RSS feed and find a way to read it. There are many places on the web that will tell you how to do this, and we also have some basic information on the library's website as well.

Once you know how to set up an RSS feed, here's how you set up an alert of your choosing:

Simply do a "Basic" search of the library's catalog and click on the orange RSS feed button at the bottom of the list of results that comes up.

For example, if you want to know when the library receives a new title by John Grisham, go to the "Basic search" page of our catalog and peform a search for Author - Begins With - Grisham, John. A page of results will appear listing all of our titles by Grisham. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the orange link. If your browser's software knows what to do with it you will be prompted to add a new feed. If this brings up a page of complex code you should copy the web page address (URL) and paste it into the appropriate form on your RSS feeder's web page.

For subject searches, you should make sure first that you are doing the exact search you need to give you the items you want. Try a few different searches to make sure you get what you need. As an example, if you want to receive notice of all new titles having to do with the Iraq War, search for Subject -- Begins With - Iraq War. The same orange link will appear at the bottom of the screen.

If you need help getting this all set up be sure to come in and ask for help. It can take a little bit of work to set yourself up for an RSS feed the first time, but once you've gotten it started I think you'll find that it was well worth the effort.
