"Lifting and Injury Prevention" - Lecture, August 12th

Back injuries due to improper lifting can happen in a split second and result in months if not years of pain and discomfort. Understanding how the body's natural "leverage" system of joints and muscles work to coordinate proper lifts can help to prevent these kinds of debilitating injuries.

Join OSHA and Applied Ergonomics specialist Steven M. Jones on Wednesday evening, August 12th at 6:30 PM for a lecture on the biomechanics of lifting and injury prevention. Steve has written a 20 page illustrated booklet on proper lifting and muscle care, which will be available free to all who attend.

Steven Jones holds two advanced degrees from Southern Connecticut State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has published articles on musculoskeletal injuries, and is an authorized instructor in HAZMAT, CPR/AED and First Aid, the National Traffic Safety Institute, and the Brain Trauma Foundation. He is a resident of Hampton, NH.

This lecture is free and open to the public, with time set aside after the lecture for questions from the audience. For more information, please contact Darrell Eifert at 926-3368.

Hi, I'm Ernie Pyle, August 11th at 6:30 PM

On Tuesday, August 11th at 6:30 PM, the Lane Memorial Library will present Hi, I'm Ernie Pyle, a one-man play by Gary Morrison.

At the time of his death on April 18, 1945, Ernie Pyle was the most widely read of all correspondents covering World War II. That is because Pyle wrote about the war from the soldier's perspective; outside, on the ground, and in the trenches alongside with them.

His columns appeared in over 380 daily and weekly newspapers, and in the Stars and Stripes, the serviceman's newspaper. Whenever Pyle came across a group of soldiers, he always introduced himself by saying: "Hi, I'm Ernie Pyle." That's how a lot of soldiers and sailors first met, in their words, "the little guy" you could really get close to. People back home eagerly awaited news from the battle zone as reported by Pyle because they knew they were getting the unvarnished truth about what it was like on the front.

In his one-man play, Hi, I'm Ernie Pyle, Gary Morrison takes Pyle's most hard hitting, poignant, relevant, and comical dispatches and presents them in a way Pyle would have if he were alive today; up close and personal.

Hi, I'm Ernie Pyle, is presented free of charge to the public, and is underwritten by a generous gift from the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library. Please contact Darrell Eifert, Head of Adult Services at (603) 926-3368 or deifert(at)hampton.lib.nh.us for more information.

Teen Frozen T-Shirt Contest

Let the sun shine!

We need the sun this afternoon for the penultimate Teen Summer Program. Today at 3:00 p.m., weather permitting, we will be having our Frozen T-Shirt Contest! Participants will be given a block of ice with a t-shirt frozen inside it. The first teen to don his or her frozen shirt will win 5 extra raffle tickets for our drawing, which will take place following the "Harry Potter Phenomenon" discussion on Tuesday August 18.
For the Frozen T-Shirt Contest, we will meet in the Lane Room as normal, but adjourn to the great outdoors for the actual contest, so we don't flood the library with our melting ice blocks!

In the event of rain this afternoon, we will play games in the Lane Room, and the Frozen T-Shirt Contest will be postponed until next week, Monday, August 3, at 3:00 p.m.

Twilight Book Club reads "The Lace Reader"

On Tuesday, August 4th at 6:30 PM, the Twilight Book Club will meet to discuss The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry.

"My name is Towner Whitney. No, that's not exactly true. My real first name is Sophya. Never believe me. I lie all the time ..." So begins a mesmerizing tale of a family of women in old Salem who can read the future in patterns of lace. Towner Whitney, whose memories have become unreliable after undergoing primitive shock therapy for her "depression" must untangle the dark threads of events that surround the disappearance of two women as they intersect with her own family history.

"Evocative, layered, smart, and astonishing, The Lace Reader is a fever dream of a novel that will haunt me for a long time to come. The Salem, Massachusetts that the Whitney women inhabit is a wild, dark place, and I loved every moment that I spent there." -- Joshilyn Jackson, author of The Girl Who Stopped Swimming

Twilight Book Club reads "Mudbound"

On Tuesday, July 7th at 6:30 PM, the Twilight Book Club will meet to discuss Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan.

Set in 1946, and winner of the 2006 Bellweather Prize, this debut novel recounts the story of Laura Allen, a Memphis schoolteacher who becomes a reluctant farmer’s wife when her husband buys a farm on the Mississippi Delta. In addition to the shock of living in near-poverty, life becomes much more complex as she becomes friends with Florence Jackson, a sharecropper’s wife, and faces a crisis when her alcoholic brother-in-law and Florence’s son both return from WWII to face the lingering racism of the Deep South.

“Told in alternating chapters by Laura, Henry, Jamie, Ronsel, and his parents, Florence and Hap, the story unfolds with a chilling inevitability. Jordan’s writing and perfect control of the material lift it from being another “ain’t-it-awful” tale to a heart-rending story of deep, mindless prejudice and cruelty. This eminently readable and enjoyable story is a worthy recipient of Kingsolver’s prize and others as well.” –Valerie Ryan
