June 19, 1947 is the birthday of Indian author Salman Rushdie. Best known for his novel The Satanic Verses, his most recent book is The Enchantment of Florence, which came out in 2008. The publisher's description:

A tall, yellow-haired young European traveller calling himself "Mogor dell'Amore," the Mughal of Love, arrives at the court of the real Grand Mughal, the Emperor Akbar, with a tale to tell that begins to obsess the whole imperial capital. The stranger claims to be the child of a lost Mughal princess, the youngest sister of Akbar's grandfather Babar: Qara Köz, 'Lady Black Eyes', a great beauty believed to possess powers of enchantment and sorcery, who is taken captive first by an Uzbeg warlord, then by the Shah of Persia, and finally becomes the lover of a certain Argalia, a Florentine soldier of fortune, commander of the armies of the Ottoman Sultan. When Argalia returns home with his Mughal mistress the city is mesmerised by her presence, and much trouble ensues. But is Mogor's story true? And if so, then what happened to the lost princess? And if he's a liar, must he die?

The Lane Memorial Library has these and other Rushdie novels for you to check out.

The Twilight Book Club reads "Possession"

Join us on Tuesday, July 6th at 6:30 PM as the Twilight Book Club meets to discuss A. S. Byatt's Booker Prize winning novel Possession. A literary / historical romance with thought and substance, Byatt won a large audience with this meld of modern thriller and a 19th century exploration of human nature and values.

"Literary critics make natural detectives," says Maud Bailey, heroine of a mystery where the clues lurk in university libraries, old letters, and dusty journals. Together with Roland Michell, a fellow academic and accidental sleuth, Maud discovers a love affair between the two Victorian writers the pair has dedicated their lives to studying: Randolph Ash, a literary great long assumed to be a devoted and faithful husband, and Christabel La Motte, a lesser-known "fairy poetess" and chaste spinster. At first, Roland and Maud's discovery threatens only to alter the direction of their research, but as they unearth the truth about the long-forgotten romance, their involvement becomes increasingly urgent and personal. Desperately concealing their purpose from competing researchers, they embark on a journey that pulls each of them from solitude and loneliness, challenges the most basic assumptions they hold about themselves, and uncovers their unique entitlement to the secret of Ash and La Motte's passion.

The Twilight Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month and is open to all avid readers! Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library, and copies of the book are available now at the Lane Library circulation desk.

"Shutter Island" in the Weston Theater

Join us on Tuesday, June 22nd at 12:30 PM and Thursday, June 24th at 5:45 PM for a showing of Shutter Island in our Weston Theater. Based on the book by popular Boston author Dennis Lehane and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this is the the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. Director Martin Scorsese creates a spine-chilling thriller that critics say “sizzles with so much suspense that it’s hot to the touch” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).

Note that this film is rated 'R', and that viewer discretion is advised. Popcorn and drinks are courtesy of the Friends of the Library, and admission is free.
