Summer Reading Party for all ages! Tuesday, August 4, 5-7 pm

Lane Memorial Library will host its annual Summer Reading Finale at Centre School, offering food, games, live music, and more. Open to the public, this festival is funded by generous support of the Friends of Lane Memorial Library. This is a celebration of the library’s community and those who participated in Summer Reading. Bring a blanket, Frisbee, games; you can either pack a picnic or purchase delicious pizza.

Flatbread Company will be on site with their mobile oven selling fresh, hot pizzas. The Kona Ice Truck will also be on site selling tasty shaved ice.

Adults, teens, and children who participated in the Summer Reading program will receive two free slices of Flatbread pizza. Adults, please bring your Summer Reading Bingo Card with at least one validated item.Teens, if you have not participated in a program, please bring a validated Bingo Card as proof.

Live music will again be provided by Wellfleet, a local Rock/Blues/Folk/Funk musical duo featuring Patrick Curry on guitar and Craig Roy on harmonica. Many thanks to the law office of Holmes & Ells for assisting the Library with their set-up.

Lawn games will be provided courtesy of Centre School and carnival games, created by local teens, will be set up to play. Face painting and a caricature booth will also offer plenty for families to do.

The Library will announce the winners of the Children and Teen raffles, and a variety of prizes will be given away to those who participated in the Summer Reading programs. Prizes include iPad minis, tickets to Canobie Lake Park, and a variety of gift cards.

Please join Lane Memorial Library at our massive end of summer party. In the event of rain, our Finale Party will be rescheduled on Thursday August 6th, 5:00-7:00 pm. Note that the Adult Reading Program and weekly prize drawings will continue throughout the month of August until their final prize drawing on September 5th of a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.

Summer Events for Teens and Kids This Week!

KIDS

Just a reminder that you have 6 library days left to turn in tickets for our end-of-summer raffles (all red and yellow tickets are due by Noon on August 3) for the Summer Reading Program! and 5 library days to turn in blue tickets for our last Gift Card Raffles (Regal Cinemas on Friday, 7/31). The more you read and the more activities you finish on the bingo card, the more chances you have to win!!!

Our annual Talent Show is coming up next week on Wednesday, July 29! If your kid(s) would like to participate please have them sign up at the Children's Room Desk as soon as possible call (926-4729) or stop by.

Fri., July 31 @ 1 pm: The Incredibles, Rated PG

Tues., Aug. 4, 5-7 pm: Summer Reading Finale Party—This will be an outdoor event on the field next to Centre School. We will have games, fun and music for the whole family. There will be a separate blog post/email for this event in the next couple of days. (Rain date—Thursday, Aug. 6)

TEENS

Summer Reading is almost over! I can't believe how quickly the time has flown this month. I'm proud of all of you who read, volunteered, and participated in programs. 

I know school is starting to creep up. Please enjoy the last bit of your summer. Go for a hike. Camp in your back yard. Ride a roller coaster. Look for beach glass at sun rise. Store up all the wonderful memories of halcyon days you can.

Here's what we'll be doing in our last six days:
July 27- will be our second to last Weekly Raffle in the Teen Area from 3:30-4:00 pm. Turn in your reading or attend to earn tickets. The Kona Ice Truck will show up for one last time!

July 27- The second to last Reading Buddies 4:00-4:30 pm, Children's Room. Our Reading Buddies program is full. 

July 28- Photo Booth 3:30-4:30 pm, Teen Area. We'll have some props for you to take selfies with. If you missed the Make a Mask program, and think you'd still like to give this a try, I'd be happy to break out the supplies. 
 
July 29- Game Booth Brainstorm Session 3:30-4:30 pm, Teen Area. Volunteers are still welcomed to help design a game booth for the End of Summer Finale Party. The booths will be for the younger children who participate in the Children's Room Summer Reading Program. Free snacks. Bring your completed ideas and list of items you plan to gather for your game booth.

July 30, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Movie in the Teen Area with free popcorn. 
July 31, 4:00-5:00 p.m. Last Water Balloon Battle, Library Lawn. I have around 400 water balloons... it would be a shame if they went to waste. 
July 31, 8:30-11:00 p.m. Skywatch with the NH Astronomical Society, North Beach, Hampton, NH.  The Society will bring several of their telescopes to this event. A beach star watch is pretty much the most awesome thing to do. Everyone should try it once. Open to all ages.
August 3, Final Game Booth Brainstorm Session 3:00-4:00 pm, Teen Area.
August 3, Final Reading Buddies 4:00-4:30 pm, Children's Room.
August 4, SUMMER FINALE PARTY!!!!! Starts at 5:00 pm, Centre School Lawn.

Earn tickets by attending any daily program(weekly raffle, movie night, Tuesday activities, etc) or volunteer program. Attend 7 programs and earn 25 tickets. There are at least 7 programs above that you could attend.

Our Skywatch has been rescheduled! Our rain date is NEXT FRIDAY, July 31st, 8:30-11:00 pm. The weather does not look favorable for tomorrow. July 31st is during the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower. Let's hope for clear skies next week.

We're well underway with summer and we're already had a lot of books turned in for Summer Reading. If you're looking for a particular book that we don't have, please let me know. I am always happy to order books for you guys.  

The list of summer reading participants back at the Ref Desk is up-to-date with everyone's Summer ID number. You can also call 926-3368 to get this number. You can then turn in your summer reading online.

On to the fun stuff!

Here's a rundown of the programs coming up:
July 20th as always we hold our Weekly Raffle in the Teen Area from 3:30-4:00 pm. Turn in your reading or attend to earn tickets. The Kona Ice Truck sells yummy Kona Ice right outside the library. Come get some Kona!

July 20th Reading Buddies 4:00-4:30 pm, Children's Room. Our Reading Buddies program is full. 

July 21st 2:00-3:30 pm Cooking For Cross Roads at the 1st Congressional Church, Hampton NH. Teens can volunteer to work with the wonderful people at the 1st Congressional Church as they make their monthly meal for Cross Roads House. This amazing program will involve prep work and cooking by teens. Adult volunteers will be on hand to guide you. The church is also providing a snack for those that attend. Cross 
Roads protects men, women and children of the Greater Seacoast area experiencing homelessness from exposure and hunger. They provide secure, transitional shelter for those seeking to break the cycle of homelessness.  They support individuals and families by providing them with the opportunity to move with dignity and purpose to stable and decent housing. 

July 21st Make a Mask 3:30-4:30 pm, Teen Area. This is a great way to start a Cosplay or Halloween costume. We'll be using a material called Worbla to make our masks. It's something that serious Cosplayers use. We'll shape, paint, and seal our masks. Space will be limited for this project, as I only have so much Worbla. First come, first serve. 
 
July 22nd & 23rd  Comic Book Workshop w/ Rich Woodall 3:00-4:00 pm, Lane Room. Rich Woodall is a New Hampshire based artist/writer, best known for his creator owned titles Johnny Raygun, the Zombie Bomb! Comic Anthology, and Kyrra Alien Jungle Girl the series he co-created with artist Craig Rousseau.  He has also worked with Image Comics on The Savage Dragon, The Perhapanauts, and done THOUSANDS of sketch cards for Marvel, DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, Mars Attacks, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. He'll be talking with teens about the comic book industry, what it's like to be a full time artist, and will also lead our teens in a drawing/creating project. And if I remember correctly from last year, he might even do a custom sketch for each participant.

Here's what's coming this week for Teens and Kids at the Library 
  • Tuesday, July 14 @ 10 am: Storytime with Miss Wendy in the Children's Room. Summer storytimes are "all ages" and drop-in.
  • Wed., July 15 @ 10 am: Jungle Jim  Star Wars Stage Show—Interactive Show, including balloon lightsabers and other fun balloon shapes. (Lane Room)
  • Thursday, July 16 at 10 am: Storytime with Miss Paulina in the Children's Room. Summer storytimes are "all ages" and drop-in.
  • American Girl Event - Fri., July 17 @ 1 pm: Grace Stirs Up Success, Not Rated **This is a sign-up event (sign ups start Monday, July 6), including a marionette show, a craft, a photo booth and more!     ***Note - Signups for this event are full. Please feel free to go on the waiting list and we will call if openings come up.***
  • Weekly Raffle Drawing - On Friday at 1 pm we will draw from the Independent Reader Bingo Raffle for 2 $10 Dunkin Donuts Gift Cards. We'll call you if you win!

We're getting into week three of Teen Summer Reading. There are 90 of you signed up for summer reading! I am in shock! Shock, I say! Happily shocked. 

We had our first raffle and four lucky people walked away with gift cards. Who doesn't want a $10 Las Olas or Dunkin Donuts gift card, an hour at Blitz Park, or a round at Captain's Cove. And all you have to do is turn in the reading I know that you're already doing this summer. 
 
Don't forget your Summer ID can be found back near the Teen Area or by calling 926-3368. You can also turn in your summer reading online.

July 14th Paracord Survival Project 3:30-4:30 pm, Teen Area. We'll be making either Paracord Bracelets or a Paracord survival grenade ala The Friendly Swede style. Check out this video for an idea of how we'll put it together. If you're going to attend this event, please let me know so that I have enough supplies. 

July 15th Search & Rescue 4:00-5:00 pm. Bryan Yeaton will be here to discuss his work as a Search and Rescue Volunteer. Bryan is a Senior Instructor for SOLO Wilderness Medicine as well as an AEMT for Bartlett /Jackson EMS and AVSAR (Androscoggin Valley Search & Rescue). Bryan spent more than eight years working for the Mount Washington Observatory. During the week, Bryan is a high school English Teacher in Hampton, NH.
 
July 16th 3:00-5:00 p.m. we'll host a Movie in the Teen Area with free popcorn. We'll choose from our DVD collection!

July 17th Teen Gaming, 4:00-5:00 pm Teen Area.

"World War II New Hampshire" - July 15th @ 6:30 PM

Plan to stop by the Lane Memorial Library on Wednesday, July 15th at 6:30 PM to hear filmmaker John Gfroerer present "World War II New Hampshire", a documentary that tells the story of life in New Hampshire during the Second World War.  Through interviews, historic news film, photos and radio reports from the battlefields, the film and discussion facilitated by Gfroerer chronicles how a nation, a state, and the citizens of New Hampshire mobilized for war and victory.

Kids' and Teens' Summer Programs Week 3!

Here's what's coming this week for Teens and Kids' at the Library

Tuesday, July 7 @ 10 am: Storytime with Miss Wendy in the Children's Room. Summer storytimes are "all ages" and drop-in.
Tues., July 7 @ 6:30 pm: Superhero Pajama Storytime AND Stuffed Animal Sleepover—  Join Miss Paulina for a super fun evening storytime. Wear your best jammies and bring your (second) favorite stuffed animal. After the storytime your stuffed animals are welcome to stay for a library sleepover. When you come back the next day to pick them up we’ll have pictures to show you all of the fun they had while you were at home asleep! (Lane Room)
K9 RescueWed., July 8 @ 10 am: NE K-9 Search & Rescue—“Lostproofing” Your Kids: New England K-9 SAR has a strong commitment to educating children and adults about how to be safe in the woods. We talk to children about how to “lostproof” themselves.; and if they get lost, how to stay safe. And of course, the dogs enjoy showing off their nosey talents! (Starting in the Lane Room and then moving to the field next to Centre School-Weather Permitting)
